About the Breed
The Great Pyrenees is prized for their courage, loyalty and intuition. They are fiercely loyal to their home and flock whether this is as a companion dog or farm guardian.
The Great Pyrenees originated as a livestock guardian in the Pyrenees Mountains of France. They remain one of the true working breeds today that actually continue to perform the tasks for which they were bred. They are not a herding breed but protectors. Therefore Great Pyrenees are independent minded and think for themselves. These guardians are large dogs (90 lbs to 150 lbs or more) able to defend flocks against wolves, bears, coyotes and coy-dogs.
Due to their working qualities this breed should not be viewed as a large white Golden Retriever or white Newfoundland. The protective nature and guardian qualities remain a steadfast characteristic of the breed and requires great responsibility of ownership.
In the home companion dog setting, the Great Pyrenees is large and beautiful totally dedicated to their families. They are especially gentle, loving and protective of well deserving children. As pets, they sometimes are overly protective and therefore must be socialized with both people and dogs through out their lifetime.
Great Pyrenees is one of the longest living of the large breed dogs and usually experience good health.
